Essential Tips

The most important things to know for a successful adventure

Core Mechanics
01

Master the Burrow Early

The burrow is the single most important mechanic in the game. It serves as your dodge, your traversal tool, your secret-finder, and your combat opener all in one. Spend time in the early areas practicing underground movement, pop-up timing, and burrow-to-attack combos. Every other skill in the game builds on top of burrow mastery.

Practice drill: In safe areas, practice burrowing and immediately popping up in different directions. Learn how far Mina travels underground and how quickly you can transition from burrow to attack.
02

Use Range Advantage with Nightstar

The Nightstar (chain mace/flail) has the longest range of the starting weapons. Use this range advantage to learn enemy attack patterns safely. You can hit enemies from outside their attack range, giving you time to observe their tells and plan your burrow dodges accordingly.

When to switch: Once you are comfortable with an enemy's patterns, consider switching to Whisper and Vesper (dual daggers) for faster Plasma generation, or the Blaststrike Maul for burst damage.
03

Adapt Weapon Choice Per Situation

Each of the 5 weapons excels in different scenarios. The Nightstar is great for crowd control and safe distance. Whisper and Vesper maximize Plasma generation. The Blaststrike Maul provides invincibility frames on charged attacks. The Hollower's Shield enables parries. The Battery Buster offers ranged damage. Switch weapons based on what you are facing.

Quick-swap habit: Get into the habit of switching weapons between encounters rather than during them. Assess the upcoming challenge and equip the best tool for the job.
04

Explore Thoroughly -- Secrets Are Everywhere

Tenebrous Isle is packed with hidden content. Break every pot, crate, and destructible object you find. Burrow near suspicious walls and floors. Check corners and dead ends for hidden passages. The game rewards thorough exploration with Sidearms, Keygears, Trinkets, and other valuable items that can significantly impact your adventure.

Burrow everywhere: Many secrets are only discoverable underground. If a wall looks slightly different or a floor tile seems out of place, burrow near it to check for hidden passages.
05

Activate Shortcuts to Reduce Backtracking

As you explore each area, look for shortcut mechanisms -- one-way doors, elevators, or passages that create faster routes between areas. Activating shortcuts dramatically reduces travel time and makes repeated visits (for grinding, shopping, or revisiting secrets) much more efficient.

Priority: When entering a new area, make finding shortcuts one of your first goals. A good shortcut can save you significant time over the course of the game.
Knowledge & Resources
06

Read the In-Game Newspaper for Hints

The newspaper in Ossex is more than just flavor text. It provides genuine gameplay hints, including clues about secret locations, updates on shop inventory, and directional hints for areas you have not yet explored. Check it every time you return to town -- the content updates as you progress through the game.

Don't skip it: Even if you think you know where to go next, the newspaper might reveal a secret you missed or a shop item you did not know existed.
07

Don't Fear Using Difficulty Modifiers

The extensive assist menu exists for a reason. If you are stuck on a boss, frustrated by a particular area, or simply want to enjoy the story without the challenge, use the available modifiers. Reducing damage, increasing health, or enabling other assists does not make you a lesser player -- it makes you a smart one who knows how to customize their experience.

Note: God Mode specifically disables Feats (achievements), but other assist options do not have this restriction. Adjust freely to find your ideal difficulty level.
Advanced Combat
08

Parry with the Hollower's Shield

Once you unlock the Hollower's Shield, practice the parry timing against regular enemies before taking it into boss fights. A successful parry stuns the enemy and opens a large window for a counter-attack. The parry window is likely generous enough to be consistent but tight enough to be rewarding.

Parry vs. Burrow: Both provide defensive options, but the parry is offensive (stuns + counter) while the burrow is repositioning (invincibility + mobility). Use parries against single enemies and burrows against groups or wide-area attacks.
09

Charge the Blaststrike Maul for Invincibility Frames

The Blaststrike Maul's charged attack grants invincibility frames during both the charge-up and the swing. This makes it uniquely valuable for boss fights where you need to tank through an attack. Time your charges so the invincibility frames cover the enemy's attack animation, then release for massive damage.

Combo potential: Charge the Maul while burrowed underground, then pop up with the charged attack already primed. This combines the burrow's invincibility with the Maul's invincibility for an extended damage window.
Progression & Economy
10

Manage Bones Wisely

Bones are your currency, your XP, and your progression all in one. Every decision about Bones is a trade-off: spend them on permanent upgrades at the Underlabs, or save them for shop purchases like Trinkets and weapon upgrades. As a general rule, prioritize permanent stat upgrades over consumable purchases, since upgrades persist forever while items can be lost.

The death risk: If you are carrying a large number of Bones and are far from an Underlab, consider whether pushing forward is worth the risk. A single death can erase hours of grinding.
11

Prioritize Attack Power Early

When spending Bones at the Underlabs, prioritize attack power upgrades in the early game. Higher attack power means enemies die faster, which means you take less damage overall and generate Plasma more efficiently. Attack upgrades have a cascading effect -- faster kills lead to safer exploration and more Bones earned per hour.

Upgrade order suggestion: Attack power first, then health, then other stats. Health upgrades become more valuable once you have the damage output to avoid prolonged fights.
12

Use Trinket Loadouts for Different Situations

With up to 5 Trinket slots available, you can create specialized loadouts for different activities. An exploration loadout might include Ferrying Wisp, Extended Burrow, and Long Jump for maximum mobility. A combat loadout might feature Attack Multiplier, Health Boost, and Electric Shock for damage and survivability. A boss loadout could include Prototype Spark for the safety net.

Swap before fights: Get into the habit of checking and adjusting your Trinket loadout before entering a new area or challenging a boss. The right Trinkets can make a dramatic difference in difficulty.
